Abstract
The purpose of this study was to review the outcomes of randomized controlled trials over the past 10 years for the effects of powered toothbrushes compared with manual toothbrushes. With the use of electronic databases of the National Library of Medicine (PubMed-MEDLINE), researches of in vivo and randomized controlled trials, published in January 2005 to September 2015 that evaluated the effects of an powered toothbrushes compared with manual toothbrushes were included in the criteria. Six trials with full articles were selected. All of oscillating-rotating and sonic type powered toothbrushes showed statistically significant differences in the removal of plaque over manual toothbrushes. However, in some of the studies on sonic type powered toothbrushes, index of gingival bleeding does not showed any significant difference compared to manual toothbrushes, or return to baseline levels. In conclusion, the use of powered toothbrushes to reduce plaque and gingivitis showed a statistically significant difference in high efficacy over manual toothbrushes. And, future studies are required to direct compare among the types of powered toothbrushes.
